Thank God for MTV in the '80s. The music, of course, was awesome, but those videos! Those videos were everything. It's not that they had great concepts or high production values, but the women making them were so amazing and the iconic outfits they wore took those shoe-string budgets to another level. Who even really knows what Madonna's "Like A Virgin" music video was about — a man who is also a lion… in Venice — but that wedding dress, the high-low hem, the giant puffy shoulders, the fingerless gloves! Madonna and her fellow '80s music video queens really knew how to sell a look. Here are 10 of the best.
1. Pat Benatar in "Love Is A Battlefield" (1983)
She's in a bar, having a rumble with some dudes. Who know what's happening, but look at that outfit! She's like some sort of sexy chimney sweep who wears all her jewelry at once because she doesn't trust her roommate not to steal it when she's out of the apartment. She's got dishtowels wrapped around her waist and rips in her stockings and you want it all.

2. Joan Jett in Joan Jett and the Blackhearts's "I Love Rock N Roll" (1981)
The original version of this video was black and white, but the color version is actually way better. Look at that red leather outfit! It is a jumpsuit? Look at those shoulder pads! And the belt! It's like the real deal version of what Balmain is trying to do every season during Paris Fashion week. Sexy. Badass. Fashion.

3. Cyndi Lauper in "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" (1983)
Is it even possible to watch this video and not want one of those giant skirts? Has a skirt ever so perfectly embodied the name and feeling of a song before? Is there anyone alive who would not have fun in that skirt? No. The answer is no.

4. Olivia Newton-John in "Physical" (1981)
How many times a day do you think the designers at American Apparel look at this video? It's essentially every piece of clothing they've ever made in a single outfit.

5. Madonna in "Like A Virgin" (1984)
Can we talk about this one again? It needs it's own moment. The into alone just wasn't enough. She's having a destination wedding to a lion. What does one wear to such a thing? A frothy mullet dress, that's what! It's ridiculous, but it's also sexy and cool and isn't that kind of the ultimate fashion trifecta?

6. Janet Jackson in "Rhythm Nation" (1989)
How do you step out from behind the shadow of the world's biggest pop star? You strap on some black, wear a key as an earring and dance like you're going to war. Janet is a style General and all the rest better fall in line.

7. Backup Dancers in Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible" (1988)
It's not often that backup dancers are able to so completely and utterly steal the show in a music video, but these girls did it. That full-face Nagels-girl makeup and those color blocked body-con dresses just make you want to scream, "Out of the way, Robert Palmer! You're blocking the shot!"

8. Cher in "If I could Turn Back Time" (1989)
You know that black American Apparel leotard with the sheer mesh V down the front that completely exposes your crotch? This outfit makes that outfit look like something you'd wear to your boyfriend's nephew's bar mitzvah. But even if you hate this outfit, hate Cher, hate everything she stands for, you've got to give it up to her for having the balls to go there. Plus that leather jacket with her big hair and those legs? Stop. Just stop. Don't ever stop!

9. Toni Basil in "Mickey" (1981)
What's not to love about a cheerleader with full-face drag-queen makeup and pigtails? And let's be real, that skater dress look is trending so hard right now that costume could easily be a Nasty Gal special by next week.

10. Tiffany in "I think We're Alone Now" (1987)
That giant acid-washed jacket is just awful. Awful like a fox! This video is like every '80s fashion cliché rolled up into one look — the patchwork, the oversized sweatshirt, the feathered hair with the French-tipped manicure! And you can't see it here, but she's wearing acid-washed skinny jeans tucked INTO her socks. How did anyone ever think that was a good idea? And yet, how is this not a thing RIGHT NOW?
